22/9/10 - Analyzing music video's

Eminem ft Rihanna - Love the way you lie - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uelHwf8o7_U&ob=av2e

Sound - Only the track music - Non diegetic - The music almost commentates the action going on on screen. At approximatley 44seconds through the line is And I love it the more that I suffer, I sufficate, and on screen she is been strangled.
Mise en Scene - The start of the video shows Rihanna, her red hair and the the fire in the background both symbolise danger and pain, in which both of these themes are recurring. These bright colours then contrast with the darkness of the clothing and of the cross cut to the girl holding fire. This contract shows the darkness of the video and the song as it's about violence. The colours also repressents the feelings, the red symbolises anger and fustration felt by both charactors, where as the the dark colours symbolise the sadness especially of the girl. At 1:19 we also see that Rihanna is wearing bright red nail varnish, to again, symbolise pain and danger
Editing - The sequences where Eminem is in the feild, there is a slight colour filter on it aswell is the scenes of domestic violence, this sequence is made darker as Eminems has been made lighter, to show the contract between love and lying. These two contracts appear through out the video. There is lot's pof cross cutting between the two people being in love and them fighting, two very contrasting things but still fit together as shown. The contrast in colours between the feild sequence and Rihanna is very divergent. Eminem is wearing white and the clip of him is very bright where as Rihanna's sequence is very dark. This again symbolises love and lying.
Camera - there are money close up, as seen of the first shot of Rihannah, this makes it intense for the audience and to show them it's not light hearted. The crane shot of eminem in the feild, gives him power as he is not directly part of the violence and instead symoblises his authorty as the lead artist.

Adele - Make you feel my love - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0put0_a--Ng

Sound - The first sound we here is the diegetic sound of alarms and cars of the strees below. When the shot of the appartment is shown the non -diegetic sound of the music track starts to play. The diegetic music is still goign on but it has been faded. Having both diegetic and non diegtic sound playing it makes the video more real, like you are watching the situation go on especially when Adele sighs and when she starts to text as you can hear the keys being tapped without having the non - diegetic sound faded.
Mise - En - Scene - The video is very dark whihc portays the feelings of lonleyness and sadness. The phone, when she starts to text lights up, this juxtposes the darkness of the room which my symbolise Adele thinking that the phone will make her happy when the person she is singing about texts back. The light may symbolise her happyness as she thinks that texting him will makle her happy.
Editing - At 18 seconds there is a deep focus on the appartments it then changes to a shallow focus of an extreme close up of adele. There is a shot of the cluture on her table, the focus is on the phone and everthing else is blured, this shows the perspective and Adele and whats she's thinking about - texting the person she sings about. It shows that nothing else matters at that moment in time not even money, with is blurred at is is not in focus.
Camera - The first shot we see is an establishing crane shot of a city. This sets the scene. There is then a long shot of a block of appartment with just the middle one lit and someone sitting in the window, this shot shows how alone she is or feeling. There are lots of close up and extreme close up shots of Adele, this shows her emotions so that the audience can really understand the song. There a lot of shots where deep focus chages to shallow focus to show an extreme close up of something or of her, again showing the audience how she feels.

Pink - Sober - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJ3ZM8FDBlg

Sound - The first thing we hear is the diegetic sound of crows - this sets the scene for quite a weird and creepy music video and they are stereotypically shows in horror movies in scary places. This is not coventioal of Pink's genre of music that is pop/rock. There is then the sound of the TV and about half way though the TV breaking Pink comes onto the TV and there is the non - diegetic sound of the music track playing aswell as the diegetic sound of the TV, this is faded to make the track music louser. The diegetic music then stops when the medium shot of pink is on the bed and it cross cuts to her being drunk. This is very abstract and jumpy, not convential of a Pink video.
Mise - En - Scene - There are lots of cross cutting between dark shots, such as when she is being sick, to light shots, the white shot. This symbolises the contrast between drunk and sober, the theme of the song. The way Pink positions herslef at the start of the video; alone, huddled up suggests she's upset or worried about something, something we later find out to be drinking. Struggling with problems or identity is very conventional of Pink's music and so her video's are usually very emotive.

Editing - There is lots of quick paced editing, a common convention of pop/rock video. There is also lot's of quick transitions between shots, these transitions include fading to black and fading to white. The lighten flickers between black, white and red. The black and white juxtapose each toher to reflect the difference in her when she's sober and when she's drunk, as she describes in the song. The red represents the danger of the drunken version of her but also the angry the sober version feels towards her drunken self of embarassment and regret.

Camera - Establishing shot of church, with crows, when the music starts and through out most of the shorts are close ups or medium shots, this is very commonwith this type of music. Camera shots are very quickly paced and often last for only a couple of seconds this is done becuase the song is very quick paced in the way it change and develops the narrative
